Do worries and fears
interfere with your daily life, relationships or
sleep? |
 |
Do you sometimes feel
overwhelmed by stress? |
 |
Have you experienced
trauma earlier in your life that still affects
you? |
 |
Does your outward
success mask your inner unhappiness? |
 |
Do you feel like a
"fake" and worry that others will find out the
"real" you? |
 |
Have you spent your
life working hard to do your best, only to be let
down by the way life has turned out? |
 |
Are your standards
for yourself so high that you often feel you fail
to meet them? |
If you answered yes to any of
these questions, you are not feeling the sense of satisfaction
and ease with your life that you could potentially
experience. You may be successful in hiding how you feel
from others, but inwardly you feel distressed, and you have to
waste a lot of energy to keep from showing it.
With the right help it is
possible to find relief from troubling feelings and symptoms
and to have a sense of comfort with yourself and enjoy your
life.
We are naturally inclined to
be afraid of things that might hurt us, so that we can protect
ourselves. But when worry becomes excessive, it limits
our freedom to get the most out of life.
You can decide whether you will
continue to be stuck or to become free and reach your full
potential in life. But you must be willing to take the
most important first step.
Taking the first
step toward getting help can seem impossible. Many people try a
number of ways to rid themselves of troubling symptoms or to
solve problems before looking for a therapist.
Some are afraid
to admit to themselves or others that they need help.
These seeming obstacles prevent them from getting the kind of
help that can really make a difference for the
better.
I am Dr. Margaret
Jordan and I specialize in treating anxiety, stress, trauma,
and self-esteem problems, through a personalized therapeutic
plan. I can help you achieve a sense of well-being and
satisfaction with yourself, your relationships, and your
life.
I practice psychodynamic therapy,
which has been shown by empirical research to be
highly effective in helping people achieve lasting
change, especially with problems that are
long-standing and
repetitive.
Neuroscience research has demonstrated
that changes in the brain occur due to the experience of
chronic anxiety or stress, or from trauma.
Other
research findings have validated the therapeutic effect of
psychodynamic therapy. This kind of therapy is based
on the fact that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are
influenced by factors which people are unaware
of.
This
potentially life-changing therapy uncovers these factors
and allows new awareness, in the context of the
relationship with the therapist, to lead to an enhanced and
more satisfying life experience.
It is
particularly useful for the feeling of being stuck and unable
to change, in spite of the desire to do so.
My work is
individually tailored to meet your unique needs.
With over 17
years of experience, a PhD in Clinical Psychology, and
extensive post-graduate training, I've helped many people find
real satisfaction and inner peace.
In addition to my
work with patients, I supervise psychiatry residents at Baylor
College of Medicine, teaching them to do psychotherapy. About
20% of my time is spent with mental health professionals who
consult with me in order to improve the therapy work they are
doing.
Along with the
above, I teach classes about psychodynamic therapy to mental
health professionals and make presentations on topics related
to psychology, and I am currently President of the
Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Society.

It is important
when choosing a therapist to consider the level of education
and training in psychotherapy the therapist has. In addition,
you need to be sure that the therapist is someone who can focus
on you and not talk about him- or herself
inappropriately.
A certain level
of comfort with your therapist is good to have, but if you
suffer from anxiety, it can be unrealistic to expect to feel at
ease with your therapist immediately. You can often get a sense
of a therapist’s style by how they present themselves to you
prior to a first appointment.
I work with
individual adults and couples, specializing in problems with
anxiety, stress, and the effects of trauma. These issues may
appear in your life as feelings of depression, social anxiety,
phobias, or relationship conflicts.
I also work with people who have
difficulty with narcissism in themselves or others, or
personality disorders.
In my experience,
the struggles adults have with unhappiness, troubling symptoms,
and difficulties with work and relationships develop from
complex experiences with others early in life.
Lasting change
involves a full understanding of the causes of the difficulties
and the development of new, healthier experiences in
psychotherapy. Each individual is unique, and psychotherapy
must address each person's life uniquely.
